The ocean is in a state of emergency

Ocean plastic is one of the most immediate threats

More than 11 million metric tons of plastic enter the ocean each year1, harming marine species and fouling beaches and coastal waters around the world. Most of that waste is carried there by rivers, with the highest flows coming from Asia.

OpenOceans Global aims to stop this stream of plastic from reaching the ocean. Showing the links between the rivers and plastic debris on beaches is a key first step.

We are mapping where large amounts of plastic are collecting on shorelines and using advanced technologies to connect this waste to probable sources. Once a river has been identified as a source, we will connect local leaders and international experts, so they can share solutions and work together to stop the flows of plastic to the sea.

We are also serving as a hub for sharing innovative ways to address other dimensions of the ocean plastic crisis, including ways to improve waste management and reducing, reusing, and substituting other materials for plastic.
